The air in Mrs. Gable’s living room was thick with the scent of lilies and a silence that felt heavier than any sound. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to falter at the threshold, casting long, mournful shadows across the floral armchair where Mrs. Gable sat, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Her eyes, red-rimmed and hollow, stared at a framed photograph on the mantelpiece – a smiling man with kind eyes and a mischievous grin. Mr. Gable, gone these six months.
I sat opposite her, my own hands trembling slightly in my lap. The dread I’d felt since agreeing to this meeting was a cold knot in my stomach, a stark contrast to the nervous flutter that had become my constant companion. This was it. The moment of truth, or perhaps, the moment of utter, mortifying failure. Mrs. Gable had heard about me, through a friend of a friend who knew someone who knew someone… the grapevine of desperation. She’d called me, her voice a fragile whisper, asking if I could… well, if I could *help*.
“Thank you for coming, dear,” Mrs. Gable said, her voice raspy. She didn’t look at me, her gaze still fixed on the photo. “I… I don’t know what to expect, really. Sarah said you might… be able to.”
