Chapter 4
The Door and the Bags
On the tenth floor, fear mixes with awe. Kenneth spots an ordinary door with four brown bags hanging beside it. The man from the lake focuses his gaze on Kenneth, silently urging them to take the bags.
The air on the tenth floor was thick with a silence that pressed in on Kenneth and his two companions, a silence broken only by the ragged rhythm of their own breathing. They had ascended through the pristine levels of the crystal building, each floor a testament to its builders' divine artistry, and now they stood at the very apex. The man from the lake, an entity as unsettling as the dark waters from which he’d emerged, remained with them, a silent, unnerving presence. He hadn’t harmed them, not yet, but his gaze, when it fell upon them, was heavy with unspoken intent.
Kenneth’s eyes, ever observant even in his fear, scanned the opulent room. It was as immaculate as the floors below, bathed in a soft, ethereal light that seemed to emanate from the very walls. Then, his gaze landed on something that seemed out of place, almost mundane amidst the celestial splendor. A door. It was an ordinary door, made of wood, with a simple handle. Nothing about it suggested the marvels or horrors that might lie beyond. But next to it, hanging neatly on the wall, were four bags. They were made of a rich, brown material, sturdy and plain, each large enough to hold a considerable amount.
A shiver traced its way down Kenneth’s spine. Why bags? And why here, on the highest floor of this holy place? He glanced at his colleagues, their faces pale masks of apprehension, mirroring his own unease. They were as bewildered as he was, their eyes darting between the door, the bags, and the silent, watchful figure who had followed them from the lake.
