The air in the pristine white building was cool and still, carrying the faint scent of something akin to polished stone and a whisper of ozone. Kenneth, his heart still thrumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs, glanced back. The man from the lake, his face a mask of unsettling neutrality, was there. He hadn't spoken a word since emerging from the turbulent waters, yet his presence was a palpable weight, a silent, insistent shadow. Beside Kenneth, his two colleagues, their faces pale and etched with a mixture of terror and bewildered awe, huddled closer. The dream, so vivid and jarring, had been their shared reality now, the boundaries between slumber and waking dissolving like mist.

“We… we have to move,” Colleague 1 stammered, his voice a thin thread of sound in the vast silence. His eyes darted from the man to the staircase, a gleaming spiral of what looked like solid moonlight.

Kenneth nodded, a knot of apprehension tightening in his stomach. There was no immediate threat, no overt aggression from the stranger, yet the sheer *otherness* of him, the unsettling stillness, was more terrifying than any roar or lunge could have been. It was the unknown, the lurking potential for malice beneath that placid, featureless face, that sent shivers down his spine.

They began to ascend, their footsteps echoing softly on the luminous stairs. Each floor unfolded before them like a pristine canvas, utterly devoid of furniture
