Chapter 7
The Cycle of Absurdity Continues
Despite the devastating loss, Santiago, with a defiant shrug and a knowing wink, declares his intention to fish again tomorrow. His unwavering, comical optimism sets the stage for another absurd quest.
The skeletal remains of the magnificent marlin lay on the sand, a stark, white monument to a battle fought and, in the eyes of the village, spectacularly lost. It was less a carcass and more a suggestion of a fish, a testament to the voracious appetites of the sea’s more organized inhabitants. The villagers, having gathered with the morbid curiosity of a crowd at a particularly slow-motion train wreck, now milled about, their whispers a symphony of pity and poorly suppressed giggles. Old Man Santiago, however, seemed remarkably unfazed. It was less of a surprise attack and more of a meticulously planned, open-water all-you-can-eat seafood smorgasbord. The marlin, he’d heard, had put up a decent fight, but against a shark posse that looked like they’d coordinated their moves via semaphore flags, it was a losing battle before it even began.
“Ay, Santiago,” Manolin began, his voice tinged with the familiar blend of exasperation and affection. “It is a shame. A great shame.”
