Santiago's Internal Monologue: Fish Edition
Santiago's thoughts are filled with increasingly absurd justifications for the fish's actions and his own. He personifies the marlin, creating a comedic dialogue with his adversary in his mind.
Santiago squinted at the sun, which was doing its best impression of a celestial spotlight on his rather pathetic situation. His internal monologue, usually a vibrant tapestry of seafaring wisdom and the occasional sea shanty, had devolved into a rather one-sided conversation with the colossal marlin still tethered to his skiff.
“Alright, you magnificent brute,” Santiago muttered, his voice raspy from the salt and the sheer absurdity of it all. “What’s your game? Are you trying to win a staring contest? Because I’ve had a lifetime of practice with my ex-wife, and I’m pretty sure you’re not going to win.”
The marlin, a shimmering, iridescent titan, gave a languid flick of its tail. Santiago, ever the optimist, interpreted this as profound agreement.
