The sleek black car purred to a halt across the street from the little café Alex had chosen for a moment’s respite. It was a nondescript place, all chrome and glass, the kind that served overpriced coffee and pretentious pastries. Perfect for blending in, or so I’d thought. My fingers, still tingling from the last dice roll, traced the worn edges of the Navigator’s Game board nestled in my backpack. It was a constant, warm weight against my spine, a silent guardian and a ticking clock.
Elias Thorne. The name itself tasted like old money and cold ambition. He’d been a ghost for so long, a rumour whispered in the hushed tones of those who understood the game’s true power. Now, he was a tangible threat, his shadowy organization a pack of wolves at my heels. Agent Sterling, a blur of efficiency and ice, had been a terrifyingly close call yesterday, her pursuit a brutal dance through the crowded streets. I’d only managed to slip away thanks to a sudden, inexplicable shift in traffic the Navigator’s Game had, with chilling accuracy, foretold.
This morning, a sleek black car with tinted windows had shadowed me for three blocks. I’d recognized the silhouette. Thorne. He wanted the game, and he wouldn’t stop until he had it. I’d ducked into a bookstore, my heart hammering against my ribs, and emerged through a side alley, hoping to lose him. But the game… it hummed with a subtle warning. A premonition, sharp as a shard of glass, told me this wasn’t over.
