The ping-pong ball, a tiny white blur, seemed to hang suspended in the air for an agonizing eternity. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the quiet hum of the arena. Every fiber of my being screamed at me to move, to react, to *do something*, but my feet felt rooted to the polished wooden floor.
