Inside the room, Lily sees rows of glowing vials. Her parents explain these contain a unique serum that helps manage their condition, but it has side effects, including the vacant stare.
The yellow door, once a stubborn, silent sentinel, now yielded with a soft click. Lily’s heart, a frantic hummingbird against her ribs, stilled just enough for her to push it open. The air that wafted out was cool, carrying a faint, sweet scent, like honeysuckle after a spring rain. She slipped inside, pulling the door shut behind her with a whisper of wood against wood. The click of the latch echoed in the sudden quiet.
She found herself in a room bathed in a soft, ethereal light. It wasn't sunlight, nor was it the stark, practical glow of electric lamps. It was a luminescence that seemed to emanate from within the room itself. Rows upon rows of small, glass vials lined shelves that stretched from floor to ceiling, their contents shimmering with an inner radiance. Some glowed a soft, pearly white, others a gentle azure, and a few pulsed with a warm, amber light. It was like standing in a galaxy of captured starlight.
Lily took a hesitant step forward, her eyes wide, trying to take in the impossible beauty of it all. The floor beneath her feet was smooth, cool stone, and the walls seemed to absorb sound, creating a profound sense of peace. It was utterly unlike any other room in the Sterling mansion, with its heavy velvet drapes and polished mahogany. This place felt… alive.
