The cool, polished brass of the yellow key felt strangely smooth under Lily’s fingertips, a stark contrast to the rough, worn edges of the lock. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, each beat a drumroll for the moment she had been waiting for. The midnight air, usually so still and silent in the Sterling mansion, seemed to hum with anticipation, or perhaps it was just the blood rushing in her ears. She stood before the yellow door, a vibrant splash of color against the muted, somber tones of the service corridor, a door that had haunted her dreams and fueled her every waking thought.

Her fingers, slick with a nervous sweat, fumbled for a moment as she tried to align the key with the keyhole. The metal was cool, almost icy, as it slid into place. A faint click echoed in the oppressive silence, a sound so small, yet so monumental. Lily held her breath, her muscles tensed, ready to pull back if any alarm was raised, if Mrs. Sterling’s stern voice or Mr. Sterling’s unnerving silence suddenly broke through the night. But there was nothing. Only the soft, satisfying thunk as the tumblers yielded.

With a slow, deliberate push, Lily nudged the door inward. It swung open with a whisper, revealing not the dark, dusty storage space she half-expected, but a room bathed in a soft, ethereal glow. It wasn't the warm, inviting light of a lamp, but a cool, phosphorescent luminescence that seemed to emanate from the very air itself. Her eyes, still adjusting to the sudden shift from darkness, struggled to make sense of the scene.
