Chapter 12
Chapter 12
The speaker and Dusk, guided by the thread of darkness, follow the memory of Dusk's dream to a cottage at the edge of the city where an old woman weaves lumen—a fabric of light from questions and silences. The infant self is placed before the loom, and the old woman teaches that every thread is a name that has been lost and found. The speaker offers the blank book, and the old woman weaves its first word into the fabric of reality, revealing that the infant's true name is 'Begin'. The chapter ends with the speaker understanding that weaving and wandering are the same motion, and they prepare to step into a new pattern.
The thread of darkness did not pull; it pointed. It curled like a finger beckoning toward the outskirts of the city, where the light of unwritten poems grew thin and the cobblestones gave way to moss and root. Dusk walked beside me, her steps sure, as if she had walked this path before. The infant slept in my arms, its breath a soft rhythm against my chest.
‘I remember,’ Dusk said, her voice low as the hum of distant looms. ‘In a dream I had before we met you, before the garden, before the boy. I was walking through a field of white flowers, and each flower held a single thread. The threads rose and wove themselves into a canopy above me. Beneath that canopy sat an old woman. She did not speak, but her hands moved like water, pulling threads from the air and weaving them into a cloth that glowed.’
‘Lumen,’ I said, the word rising unbidden.
