The late afternoon sun cast long, languid shadows across the manicured lawns of Blackwood Manor. Clara, armed with a watering can and a hopeful heart, found herself drawn to the oldest part of the gardens, where ancient rose bushes twisted like arthritic fingers towards the sky. It was here, nestled amongst the overgrown lavender and the whisper of wind chimes, that she’d often seen Mr. Abernathy, the estate’s venerable gardener, tending to his beloved blooms. Today was no different. He was a fixture of the manor, his presence as dependable as the turning of the seasons, his hands roughened by decades of coaxing life from the soil.
“Mr. Abernathy?” Clara’s voice was soft, a gentle ripple in the quiet air.
The old man, his back bent like a well-worn trowel, straightened slowly, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by sun and time. A kind smile crinkled the corners of his eyes, which were the colour of faded denim. “Ah, Miss Clara. Come to admire the dahlias, have you?”
