The rhythmic hum of the surgical suite is a familiar lullaby, a constant counterpoint to the delicate dance of life and death we perform daily. My gloved fingers, encased in sterile green, move with practiced grace, navigating the intricate landscape within the patient. The overhead lights, stark and unforgiving, illuminate the sterile blue of our gowns, caps, and drapes, creating a world of precise, controlled chaos. Beside me, Juni’s steady hands mirror my movements, her brow furrowed in concentration. Cat, ever the anchor, monitors the vital signs, her voice a low, reassuring murmur in the otherwise silent room, punctuated only by the soft beep of the machines. Charlie, her usual effervescence muted by the gravity of the moment, stands ready, her eyes sharp, anticipating my next move. We are an orchestra, each instrument tuned to perfection, playing a symphony of survival.
My focus narrows, drawing closer to the anomaly that has presented itself. It’s a deviation, a subtle yet unsettling departure from the textbook anatomy I’ve dissected countless times. A patch of tissue, unlike anything I’ve seen in my studies, or even in the few brief years I’ve been practicing. It’s a deep, almost iridescent crimson, pulsing faintly with a life of its own, and it’s growing. I’ve seen bleeding, clots, adhesions—all the usual suspects that can throw a wrench into even the most routine procedure. But this… this is something else entirely. It’s alien, yet undeniably organic, a biological mystery blooming where it shouldn't.
“Juni,” I murmur, my voice barely a whisper, careful not to break the fragile bubble of concentration we’ve built. “Do you see this?”
