Chapter 7
Echoes of the Past
Kubo, the sole survivor from the hospital, begins to investigate the disappearances. She uncovers fragmented clues pointing towards a pattern of mimicry and manipulation, connecting Soichi to a larger, sinister network.
Kubo traced the faint, almost invisible seam where the wallpaper had been peeled back, her breath catching in her throat. The sterile scent of the hospital room, usually a comforting balm after the disorienting aftermath of her… awakening, now felt heavy with unspoken dread. It had been days since Soichi, his eyes like chips of obsidian when he’d finally noticed her, had tried to silence her with that crude, sharpened piece of metal. Days since she’d scrambled, a terrified blur of ginger and black hair, down the deserted corridors, the echoes of her own ragged gasps the only sound in the pre-dawn stillness.
She was the only one left. The only one who hadn’t been… absorbed. Or erased. The word itself felt too gentle for the chilling void that had swallowed the others. Kubo shuddered, pulling the thin hospital gown tighter around herself. Her mind, a jumbled tapestry of borrowed memories and fragmented terror, was slowly, agonizingly, beginning to stitch itself together. The taste. That was the key. The metallic tang, the strange, almost electric sensation that had flooded her senses when she’d… consumed. It was a memory she desperately wanted to forget, yet it was the only anchor she had in this sea of confusion.
She knew, with a certainty that vibrated through her bones, that Soichi was more than just a nurse. He was a conduit. A puppet master, perhaps, or a willing participant in something far more ancient and terrifying. The missing patients. The hushed whispers of the staff, quickly silenced when she’d dared to ask. The unnerving emptiness of the wards. It all pointed to a pattern, a deliberate, insidious process.
