The snow fell in fat, lazy flakes, blanketing the world in a hushed white. Christmas Day. A time for warmth, for family, for the comforting scent of pine and gingerbread. But for the Mimic, it was just another day, another opportunity. It drifted through the quiet streets, a phantom in the festive air, its borrowed form a perfect picture of innocent anonymity. Its eyes, a shade of blue that could charm the stars from the sky, scanned the sparse crowds, searching for the flicker of vulnerability, the whisper of loneliness that would draw it in. It was a predator, cloaked in borrowed beauty, its hunger a constant, gnawing ache.

It had been a good run, this latest iteration. A young woman, impossibly lovely, with a cascade of auburn hair and a smile that promised sunshine. It had found her, a fleeting moment of despair on a park bench, and slipped in, like a shadow into an open door. Now, it wore her skin, walked her walk, and felt the hollow echo of her lost life as its own. But the skin was growing thin, the borrowed emotions starting to fray. It needed a new vessel, a fresh canvas for its insatiable appetite.

A small, brightly lit bakery caught its eye. The scent of sugar and spice wafted out, a siren call. Inside, a young girl, no older than ten, was helping her mother decorate cookies. Her cheeks were rosy from the cold, her eyes wide with innocent joy as she carefully placed a tiny candy cane on a gingerbread man. The Mimic felt a familiar surge, a tightening in its chest. This was it. The perfect, unsuspecting soul.
