Kubo’s fingers, stained with the faint, earthy scent of the donated remains, traced the intricate patterns of the hospital’s ventilation system. Ran, beside her, felt a tremor of unease ripple through her form, a sensation that had become as familiar as the phantom ache of limbs she no longer possessed. The air in the abandoned wing was thick with the cloying sweetness of disinfectant and something else, something metallic and ancient, like rust that had bled for centuries.

“He’s getting bolder,” Kubo murmured, her voice a low rasp that seemed to echo from the very walls. “Moving them so openly. It’s like he wants to be found.”

Ran shifted, the strange, mud-like substance of her body rippling. “Or he thinks he’s untouchable. Soichi. He’s been careful, weaving himself into this place, using the… the donations. But he underestimated us.” She paused, a flicker of the old fear, the terror of her own fractured existence, surfacing. “He underestimated me.”
