The little car, packed tighter than a sardine can with sandy towels, forgotten buckets, and a lingering scent of salt and sunscreen, pulled away from the familiar little cottage. Lily, nestled in her car seat, was already asleep, her head tilted against the window, a faint smile gracing her lips. In her small hand, clutched with the tenacity only a sleeping child can possess, was a perfect, pearly seashell. Sarah, in the driver's seat, risked a glance in the rearview mirror. Her heart ached with a familiar, bittersweet pang. The azure shore, which had been their vibrant playground for the past weeks, was shrinking, becoming a distant shimmer in the heat haze.

It felt like only yesterday they had arrived, Lily a whirlwind of excitement in her mermaid swimsuit, her heart-shaped sunglasses perched precariously on her nose, ready to dive headfirst into the magic of summer. Sarah remembered the initial flutter of anxiety that always accompanied Lily's boundless energy, the way her own gaze would constantly track her daughter, a silent, invisible tether of love and worry. She’d seen Lily get lost in the intricate patterns of shells, her small brow furrowed in concentration, or chase the retreating waves with a joyous abandon that made Sarah’s breath catch in her throat. There had been moments, too, small scrapes on knees and elbows, the sting of a jellyfish, and once, a terrifying few minutes when a particularly strong tide had pulled Lily further out than Sarah had anticipated, her heart leaping into her mouth before she’d rushed in, scooping her daughter into her arms. And then there was the storm, a sudden, tempestuous fury that had lashed the coast, mirroring the tempest of fear that had raged within Sarah when she couldn't immediately see Lily, only to find her safe, mesmerized by the churning sea from the shelter of the old boathouse.

But those moments of panic, those sharp edges of fear, had always been smoothed away by the overwhelming tide of relief, by the fierce, unwavering love that surged through her. She’d held Lily close, inhaling the scent of her sun-kissed hair, and felt a profound gratitude for this small, vibrant human who filled her world with such color and light. The quiet moments, too, were etched into her memory: Lily’s delighted squeals as she discovered a perfectly formed starfish in a tide pool, the way she’d point out fantastical shapes in the clouds, her imagination painting worlds Sarah could only glimpse. They had built sandcastles that were swept away by the next high tide, and yet, the memory of their creation, their shared laughter, remained.
