The salty air, usually so full of promise, now carried a whisper of goodbye. Lily stood at the edge of the dunes, her tiny shoulders slumping just a little. The vast, shimmering expanse of the ocean, which had been her playground, her kingdom, her secret world for weeks, stretched out before her, an endless, blue invitation she could no longer accept. Her mermaid swimsuit, still damp from their last dip, lay folded neatly in her suitcase, a silent testament to adventures past. Even her beloved heart-shaped sunglasses, perched precariously on her nose, seemed to reflect a touch of melancholy.

Sarah watched her daughter from a few steps behind, her heart a familiar ache. This was always the hardest part. The vibrant energy that had pulsed through Lily from the moment they arrived, the gleeful shrieks and boundless curiosity, began to dim as the reality of departure settled in. The sandy path leading back to the car felt heavier now, each grain a tiny anchor holding them to this magical place.

"It's so big, Mama," Lily murmured, her voice barely audible above the gentle roar of the waves. She pointed a small finger towards the horizon, where the sea met the sky in a hazy, indigo line. "It keeps going and going."
