Chapter 17
The Last Mermaid Day
Lily dons her mermaid suit one last time. She swims and plays, but stays within sight of Sarah, a newfound awareness in her innocent games. Sarah treasures every second.
The air, usually so crisp and salty, felt a little softer today, tinged with the bittersweet scent of endings. Lily, her heart already a little heavy with the knowledge that their seaside escape was drawing to a close, pulled on her favorite mermaid swimsuit. It was a shimmering creation of turquoise and silver scales, a testament to countless hours of imaginative play. She wiggled into it with a sigh, the familiar fabric a comforting embrace. Then, the heart-shaped sunglasses, their pink lenses promising a world of rosy hues, perched on her nose. Today, she decided, would be the last mermaid day.
Sarah watched her daughter from the worn wooden steps of their rented cottage, a familiar ache mingling with profound love. Lily’s spirit, so bright and untamed, was a constant source of joy, and also, a quiet hum of anxiety beneath Sarah’s surface. This year, though, felt different. After the scare of the storm, after the frantic search and the immense relief of finding her little mermaid safe, something had shifted. Lily seemed to possess a newfound, albeit subtle, awareness. She still lost herself in her games, of course, but there was a new thread of connection, a gentle tether to her mother that hadn't been quite so strong before.
Lily skipped down to the beach, her laughter like tiny bells carried on the breeze. She ran towards the water’s edge, her bare feet sinking into the cool, damp sand. The waves, gentler today after the tempestuous days past, lapped at her ankles. She splashed and twirled, her mermaid tail kicking through the water, her heart-shaped sunglasses glinting in the sun. Sarah followed, a comfortable distance behind, her eyes never straying from the small, vibrant figure. She brought a book, but the words blurred on the page, her attention wholly absorbed by the spectacle of her daughter’s pure, unadulterated happiness.
