The sky bled into a spectacular spectrum of fire and rose as the sun began its slow descent towards the horizon. Sarah and Lily sat side-by-side on a driftwood log, the cool sand seeping through their picnic blanket, a soft counterpoint to the day’s warmth. The near-miss, the frantic minutes of fear that had gripped Sarah’s heart, now felt like a distant echo, softened by the gentle lapping of waves and the shared, quiet breathing of her daughter. Lily, her mermaid swimsuit now a little sandy and damp, leaned her head against Sarah’s arm, her heart-shaped sunglasses perched precariously on her nose, reflecting the dazzling display above.
“It’s like a giant painting, Mommy,” Lily murmured, her voice hushed with awe.
Sarah squeezed her daughter’s shoulder, a wave of profound gratitude washing over her. The world, just hours ago, had felt poised on the brink of a terrible unraveling. The memory of Lily’s small, brightly colored form disappearing behind a cluster of rocks, the sudden, chilling realization of her absence, still sent a tremor through her. But now, here she was, safe and warm beside her, her small hand nestled in Sarah’s. The old fisherman, Hemlock, with his kind, crinkled eyes and the scent of salt and pipe tobacco clinging to him, had been a beacon of calm in the storm of Sarah’s panic. He’d found Lily mesmerized by a particularly vibrant starfish in a tide pool, oblivious to the distress she’d caused.
