Chapter 11
A Mother's Frantic Search
Panic sets in. Sarah calls Lily's name, her voice swallowed by the wind and waves. She runs along the shoreline, her eyes scanning desperately through the disorienting mist.
The wind whipped Sarah’s hair across her face, tasting of salt and a sudden, sharp fear. It had been only a moment, a blink of an eye really, when she’d turned from the shimmering, sun-dappled water to find Lily’s bright, mermaid-scaled swimsuit nowhere in sight. One second, Lily had been giggling, her heart-shaped sunglasses perched precariously on her nose as she chased a retreating wave. The next, only the endless, churning grey of the sea met Sarah’s gaze.
"Lily!" The name ripped from her throat, a raw, ragged sound that the wind seemed to snatch and tear apart before it could travel more than a few yards. Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the roar of the surf. The mist, which had been a gentle veil earlier, now seemed to thicken, swirling in ghostly tendrils that blurred the edges of the world. The familiar beach, so full of joyful promise just moments before, transformed into a disorienting labyrinth.
Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at her. This was her deepest fear, the one that lurked in the quiet hours of the night, the one she pushed away with every loving glance, every gentle touch. Lily, her spirited, imaginative Lily, had a way of disappearing, not just from sight, but from the world, lost in the depths of her own wondrous daydreams. But this was different. This was the wild, untamed sea, and the tide was beginning to pull with a new, insistent strength.
