Lost in the Mist
A sudden, thick fog rolls in from the sea. Lily, chasing a shimmering butterfly, wanders off. Sarah's heart leaps into her throat, her worst fear momentarily realized.
The sky, which had been a brilliant, unwavering blue just moments before, began to fray at the edges. A softness, like a whispered secret, crept in from the ocean, and before Sarah could even point it out to Lily, the world dissolved into a pearly, opaque haze. Fog. It rolled in with a silent, determined grace, swallowing the horizon, muffling the boisterous cries of the gulls, and turning the familiar beach into an ethereal, unknown landscape.
Lily, however, seemed unfazed. Her mermaid swimsuit, a shimmering cascade of turquoise and silver scales, gleamed even in the muted light. Her heart-shaped sunglasses, perched precariously on her nose, caught the diffused glow, reflecting back tiny, distorted rainbows. She was utterly captivated by a butterfly, its wings the colour of a sunset, flitting just beyond her reach.
"Look, Mama! It's a sea-fairy butterfly!" Lily’s voice was a bright chime, cutting through the growing stillness. She took a tentative step, then another, her small legs carrying her further from Sarah’s side. "It’s going to show me where the treasure is!"
