Chapter 9
The First Hint of Storm
Dark clouds gather on the horizon. The wind picks up, and the waves grow restless. Sarah feels a familiar unease, her protective instincts kicking into higher gear.
The sky, which had been a flawless, boundless blue only moments before, began to bruise at the edges. Sarah, her eyes tracing the playful arc of a wave as it crashed against the shore, felt a prickle of unease. It was a familiar sensation, a tiny tremor that ran through her whenever the sea decided to shift its mood. Lily, oblivious, was a flash of shimmering scales and bright pink coral as she chased the retreating foam, her heart-shaped sunglasses perched precariously on her nose. The mermaid swimsuit, her absolute favorite, seemed to capture the very essence of the ocean’s magic, a magic that Sarah, in her quiet moments, sometimes found a little unnerving.
A gust of wind, stronger than the gentle caresses of the morning, tugged at Sarah’s hair, whipping strands across her face. It carried with it the salty tang of the sea, but also a deeper, wilder scent, a hint of something untamed gathering strength. The waves, which had been lapping playfully at their feet, began to swell, their crests tipped with an agitated white. Sarah’s gaze flickered from Lily, who was now gleefully attempting to build a sandcastle fortress against the encroaching tide, to the darkening horizon. The cheerful chatter of seagulls seemed to be replaced by a more urgent cry, a warning carried on the rising wind.
“Lily, sweetheart!” Sarah called, her voice a little louder than usual, trying to cut through the growing roar of the surf. “Maybe we should move our things a little further up the beach.”
