The hiss of depressurization was a sound I’d rehearsed a thousand times in my head, a symphony of anticipation and dread. It was the overture to the grandest performance of my life, the moment the steel womb of the *Odyssey* would finally yield to the alien embrace of Mars. I gripped the interior of the hatch, my knuckles white, the worn photograph of Grandma tucked deep in my inner suit pocket, a familiar, comforting weight against my ribs. Her stories of the constellations, of the glittering dust motes dancing in the sunbeams of her childhood garden, had planted the seed of this impossible dream. Now, that seed was about to sprout on a world painted in hues of rust and ochre.

Mission Control’s voice crackled in my ear, a steady anchor in the churning sea of my emotions. “Deagan, final pressure check complete. You are green for egress.” Dr. Aris’s voice, as always, was a calm harbor. I could picture her now, probably hunched over a console, her brow furrowed in concentration, a faint smudge of ink on her cheek from a late-night calculation. She’d been my rock through the system failures, my unwavering guide when the void threatened to swallow me whole. This moment was as much hers as it was mine.

“Acknowledged, Mission Control,” I replied, my voice a little rougher than I’d intended. “Hatch is ajar.”
