The silence was a palpable thing, a heavy blanket woven from the absence of sound and the immense distance that separated me from everything I’d ever known. For days, the hum of the ship’s life support had been my constant companion, a monotonous lullaby against the vast blackness outside. Then came the tremors, the sickening lurch, and the frantic dance with disaster. Now, as the automated systems whirred back to life, a fragile equilibrium returned, but it was a peace tinged with a profound awareness of how close I’d come to becoming another phantom in the void.

“Deagan, report,” Mission Control’s voice, crisp and steady, cut through the stillness. Dr. Aris Thorne, her calm a beacon in the storm, was my lifeline.

“Systems nominal, Dr. Thorne,” I replied, my voice a little rougher than I intended. I ran a diagnostic, my fingers flying across the console, confirming the repairs. “The primary coolant loop rerouted successfully. Backup power stable. We’re… we’re good to go.” A shaky breath escaped me. “We made it through.”
