A Calculated Encounter

The floorboards creaked beneath my bare feet, a familiar symphony of protest that no longer sent a shiver down my spine. It was a sound I’d learned to interpret, to filter out, like the distant hum of traffic or the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall. But tonight, the silence was different. I’d turned off all the lights except for a single lamp in the living room, casting a warm, inviting glow that I hoped would draw him out. I was an actress, stepping onto a stage, and my audience was a phantom.
