The sun, a warm, golden blanket, spread across Oraifite, chasing away the last lingering shadows of night. It felt different today, this sunrise. It felt like a promise, a gentle whisper that even after the longest, darkest storm, the light always returns. My heart, which had felt so heavy for so long, seemed to lift a little, like a bird finally released from its cage. I sat by the window, watching the children in the distance, their laughter like little bells chiming in the morning air. They ran and played, their faces bright with innocent joy, and for a moment, I could almost forget the stories that had weighed so heavily on my mind.

But I couldn't truly forget. How could I? The faces of children like Chika, their eyes holding a sadness that no child should ever carry, were etched into my memory. I had seen their fear, felt their helplessness, and it had ignited a fire within me, a fierce determination to speak for those who couldn't speak for themselves. This book, this story I was telling, was my way of holding up a lamp in the dark places, of showing the world that no child deserves to be treated with cruelty.

I remembered Chika’s small, trembling hands, how she used to hide them behind her back, as if ashamed of their very existence. Her stepmother’s harsh words, sharp as broken glass, would sting the air around her, and Chika would shrink into herself, a tiny sparrow trying to disappear. But even in her fear, there was a spark, a quiet resilience that I admired so much. I saw it when she would share her meager portion of food with a stray dog, her eyes full of a compassion that her own guardian denied her. I saw it when she would hum a soft, tuneless melody to herself when she thought no one was listening, a song of dreams tucked away in the deepest corners of her heart.
