Jealousy Brews
As Jason connects with one sister, the others notice. Aurora's competitive streak flares, Celeste gets possessive, and Seraphina feels a pang of unfamiliar emotion. Tension rises.
The scent of freshly baked cookies, a surprising departure from the usual subtle floral notes that permeated the house, wafted from the kitchen. Jason, armed with a plate piled high, found Luna perched on the window seat in the living room, her sketchbook open on her lap. Sunlight caught the dust motes dancing around her, illuminating the delicate curve of her cheek as she sketched. He hesitated for a moment, a familiar ripple of awkwardness passing through him, but the aroma of chocolate chips and warm dough was a powerful motivator.
“Hey, Luna,” he said, offering the plate. “Dad’s baking again. Thought you might like some.”
Luna’s head shot up, her large, expressive eyes widening slightly. A faint blush bloomed on her cheeks. “Oh, Jason. Thank you. They smell wonderful.” She carefully set her pencil down, her slender fingers leaving a faint smudge of graphite on the page. As she reached for a cookie, her gaze flickered to her sketchbook. Jason’s curiosity, a constant companion in this new, bizarre family dynamic, nudged him. “What are you drawing?” he asked, his voice gentle.
