Chapter 5
A Shared Interest
Jason discovers a shared hobby with one of the sisters, perhaps art with Luna or a book club with Seraphina. This creates a personal connection, making him more than just 'the stepbrother'.
The scent of turpentine and linseed oil, usually a comforting aroma to Jason, felt alien in this new house. It clung to the air, a whisper of creativity that he hadn’t expected to find here, amidst the polished surfaces and hushed elegance. He’d been wandering the expansive home, a guest in his own father’s newly acquired life, when he’d found himself drawn to a door tucked away at the end of a long, sun-drenched corridor. It was slightly ajar, and a soft, rhythmic scratching sound beckoned him closer.
Peeking through the opening, Jason found himself in a room that was a stark contrast to the rest of the house. This was Luna’s sanctuary. Canvases leaned against the walls, some finished with bold strokes of color, others mere sketches, hinting at nascent ideas. Jars overflowing with brushes stood like miniature forests on a paint-splattered easel. And there, at a large, sturdy table bathed in the afternoon light, sat Luna.
She was hunched over a sketchbook, her brow furrowed in concentration, her usually pale cheeks flushed with a subtle warmth. Her pencil danced across the page, a delicate, almost imperceptible sound that Jason had mistaken for scratching from a distance. He watched, captivated, as her hand moved with an practiced grace, bringing form and shadow to life. He noticed the way her dark hair, usually pulled back in a neat braid, had a few stray tendrils escaping, framing her face as she worked.
