The air in the shared living space hummed with a new, almost tangible energy. It was the quiet buzz of a switched-on circuit, the subtle thrum of something both exciting and terrifyingly unknown. Jason, still finding his footing in this sprawling, newly formed family, felt it most keenly. It was in the way his stepsisters’ gazes sometimes lingered a fraction too long, in the carefully constructed politeness that felt more like a delicate dance than genuine familial ease.

Breakfast had been a masterclass in controlled chaos. Seraphina, ever the poised matriarch, had meticulously arranged the fruit platter, her movements precise, her expression unreadable. It was a delicate balancing act, and he was acutely aware of the tightrope he was walking.
