Seraphina stood at the edge of the living room, a silent sentinel against the encroaching chaos that Jason’s presence seemed to stir. The air, usually crisp and controlled within the grand house, now hummed with an unfamiliar energy, a low thrum of anticipation that emanated from her younger sisters. Aurora was in the middle of a boisterous recounting of some minor triumph, her voice a little too loud, her gestures a little too grand, all aimed squarely at capturing Jason’s attention. Luna, as usual, sat a little apart, her gaze flitting between Jason and her sketchbook, a faint blush coloring her cheeks whenever their eyes met. And Celeste, bless her impulsive heart, was practically vibrating with suppressed glee, her eyes sparkling with a mischievous glint that Jason had come to associate with impending, albeit usually harmless, trouble.

Jason, for his part, was navigating this swirling vortex of sisterly attention with a practiced patience that belied his years. He’d managed to deflect Aurora’s latest attempt to drag him into some impromptu performance, offered Luna a quiet compliment on her drawing that had sent her into a delightful flurry of stammering, and had even preempted Celeste’s plan to “borrow” his favorite video game by suggesting a cooperative play session instead. He was learning. He was adapting. And, he admitted to himself, a small, hidden part of him was actually enjoying the bizarre, wonderful mess.

But Seraphina remained an enigma. She was the eldest, the one who carried the weight of responsibility with an almost regal bearing. Her intelligence was sharp, her wit dry, and her composure seemingly unshakeable. She treated Jason with a polite, distant respect, offering occasional nods of acknowledgment and carefully chosen words that never betrayed a hint of personal feeling. It was like trying to warm a glacier; admirable in its stoicism, but utterly resistant to any outward warmth.
