Chapter 12
Aurora's Grand Gesture
Ambitious Aurora plans a grand gesture to win Jason's heart, perhaps a romantic dinner or a public declaration. It goes slightly awry, making it endearing and funny.
Aurora surveyed her domain, the spacious, sun-drenched kitchen that was usually the domain of hushed conversations and strategically placed smiles. Today, however, it was a battleground. Her sisters, Seraphina, Luna, and Celeste, were scattered like chess pieces, each occupying a space that felt, to Aurora’s keen, competitive eye, far too comfortable. Seraphina was buried in a book, her brow furrowed in concentration, a silent fortress. Luna was sketching at the island, her pencil a whisper against the paper, lost in her own world. And Celeste, bless her impulsive little heart, was attempting to teach the family’s pampered Persian cat, Snowball, to fetch a miniature sparkly wand. It was all too… serene. Too normal.
Normal was not on Aurora’s agenda. Not anymore. Not when Jason, her new stepbrother, was a constant, tantalizing presence. He was kind, undeniably, and possessed a quiet strength that drew her in like a moth to a flame. But Seraphina was too aloof, Luna too shy, and Celeste… well, Celeste was just too young to truly appreciate the complexities of the situation. Aurora, on the other hand, understood ambition. She understood the need to stand out, to claim what was rightfully hers. And Jason, she felt with a certainty that vibrated in her bones, was hers to claim.
Her father, bless his oblivious heart, had mentioned Jason’s arrival with a casual shrug, as if introducing a new brand of cereal. But Aurora had seen the way Jason’s eyes, a warm hazel that held a hint of amusement, had landed on each of them. She’d seen the subtle shifts in their postures, the almost imperceptible widening of their pupils. It was a silent war, and Aurora intended to win it decisively.
