The midday sun, usually a warm comfort, felt like a harsh interrogation on Aurelia’s skin. She’d been tasked with gathering wild herbs from the Whispering Woods, a task that Lord Valerius had set for her with his usual, almost unnerving, calm. “The Moonpetal Bloom,” he’d instructed, his eyes like ancient pools reflecting a sky she couldn’t quite decipher, “only grows where the shadows are deepest, yet where the light still finds a way to touch.” It was a riddle wrapped in an instruction, typical of the man who had raised her, a man whose past was as veiled as the deepest woods.

This was a sound of hunger, of primal intent.
