Chapter 8
Chapter 8 — Six Days
In the six days before the spring tide, Elise and William prepare for the threshold ritual while navigating the emotional weight of what it demands. Cael and Mirabel work to determine the ritual's location on the seafloor, narrowing it to a deep trench past the continental shelf. Elise's sea-sense grows sharper, allowing her to perceive the First Conduit's presence waiting below. William struggles with the impossibility of accompanying Elise to the seafloor but commits to supporting her from the surface. Elise begins practicing the promise she must speak, discovering that the words must come from genuine intent rather than recitation. On the fifth day, a complication emerges: the mark's frequency shifts, signaling that the child's consciousness is growing more active and that the window for the ritual may be narrower than six days. Cael warns that if they miss the spring tide, the next opportunity will not come for months—months the child may not remain in the womb. The chapter ends with Elise standing at the harbor's edge at night, hearing her daughter's heartbeat sync with the tide, knowing they must leave at dawn.
The counting began.
Not the kind of counting Elise had done throughout her pregnancy—the weeks marked in a physician's ledger, the days noted in Mirabel's careful hand, the hours measured by the sun's arc across the tower windows. This was different. This was the count of something finite and irreversible, a number that shrank with each sunset and carried the weight of everything that would follow.
Six days.
