Chapter 7

Chapter 7 — The First Conduit

In the days following the harbor event, Elise's connection to her unborn daughter deepens as the mark's frequency intensifies. William organizes preparations for the approaching threshold, working with Cael and Mirabel while struggling to relinquish control. Cael reveals more about the First Conduit—an ancient mortal woman who became the original bridge between the sea goddess and humanity, and who now serves as the threshold keeper for marked children. Elise experiences a vivid vision through the mark, seeing the First Conduit's origin and understanding what truly awaits her daughter. The group discovers the binding ritual requires not just the child's consent but the mother's willingness to let go, creating an impossible tension between protection and surrender. As Elise and William reconcile their fears together, the First Conduit makes contact directly through Elise's mark, delivering a message that changes everything they thought they understood about the threshold. The chapter ends with Elise realizing she must seek out the First Conduit herself before the spring tide arrives.

Elise knew all of this because the mark told her.
