The world was a dazzling expanse of white, a fluffy blanket of snow stretching as far as Pinky’s bright, curious eyes could see. Sunlight, a shy visitor in these frosty lands, sparkled on the ice crystals, making everything shimmer like a field of tiny diamonds. Pinky, a polar bear cub so fluffy she looked like a walking snowball with a perfectly tied pink bow perched jauntily on her head, wiggled her nose. It was a perfect day, the kind of day that made her little paws itch to explore, but today, her paws were perfectly content to stay right where they were.

Beside her, nestled in a hollow of soft snow, was her most treasured possession: Teddy. Teddy wasn't just any teddy bear. He was soft, a comforting shade of brown that was a welcome contrast to the endless white, and he had one button eye that always seemed to wink at her. Pinky loved Teddy more than sweet, frozen fish, more than chasing snowflakes, and even more than a good belly rub from her Mama.

“Let’s play hide-and-seek, Teddy!” Pinky chirped, her voice a little squeak that was almost lost in the vast quiet of the Arctic. She nudged Teddy with her nose, then giggled, a bubbly sound that echoed slightly. “You hide first!”

She nudged him again, a little harder this time, intending to nudge him behind a small snowdrift. But Teddy, being a stuffed bear, was surprisingly slippery. With a gentle roll, he tumbled away from her, down a slight incline, and disappeared behind a larger mound of snow.

“Oh! You’re a good hider!” Pinky exclaimed, her pink bow bobbing with excitement. She scrambled to her feet, her fluffy tail giving a happy little flick. She padded towards where she’d last seen Teddy, her pink bow bouncing against her white fur. The snow crunched softly under her paws as she approached the snowdrift.

“Where are you, Teddy?” she murmured, peering around the edge of the drift. No Teddy. She sniffed the air, her sensitive nose twitching. She could smell the crisp, clean scent of snow, the faint salty tang of the distant sea, but no Teddy.

A tiny frown creased Pinky’s brow. She trotted a little further, her curiosity piqued. Maybe he’d rolled a bit more? She rounded another snowdrift, and then another. The landscape, which had seemed so familiar just moments ago, was starting to look a little different. The snowdrifts were taller, the icy patches a little more spread out.

“Teddy?” she called again, her voice a little louder this time. A faint puff of snow tickled her nose. She took another step, then another, her eyes scanning the white expanse. She was so focused on finding her beloved Teddy that she didn’t notice how far she was venturing from the cozy warmth of her den, or how the familiar scent of her Mama was fading with every passing moment.

Suddenly, a gust of wind swirled around her, carrying with it a flurry of snowflakes that danced and spun like tiny ballerinas. Pinky blinked, momentarily disoriented. When the wind died down, she looked around. Teddy was nowhere in sight.

A flicker of worry, small and cold, began to bloom in Pinky’s chest. She spun around, trying to retrace her steps, but everything looked the same. White snow, white sky, white ice. Where was her den? Where was Mama?

A little whimper escaped her. She was alone.

Back near the den, Mother Polar Bear stretched languidly, her massive form a picture of calm strength. She’d been watching Pinky play, a fond smile playing on her lips as she observed her cub’s joyful antics. Pinky was such a spirited little thing, always so full of life.

“Pinky! Time for a snack!” Mother Polar Bear called out, her voice a deep, rumbling sound that usually brought Pinky bounding back with a happy squeal.

Silence.

Mother Polar Bear tilted her head, her ears swiveling. That was odd. Pinky never missed a snack. She called again, a little louder this time. “Pinky! Come here, little one!”

Still no answer. A prickle of unease, sharp and unwelcome, began to creep up Mother Polar Bear’s spine. She stood up, her powerful legs carrying her towards where she’d last seen Pinky. The snowdrifts looked undisturbed, but Pinky was nowhere to be seen.

“Pinky!” Mother Polar Bear’s voice was laced with a growing concern now. She padded around the area, her keen eyes scanning the vast white landscape. She caught a faint scent, the sweet, innocent smell of her cub, but it was weak, and carried on the wind, fading fast.

Panic began to claw at her. Pinky was adventurous, yes, but she never wandered far. Not without Mama. Where could she have gone? Mother Polar Bear let out a low, worried growl, a sound of pure maternal fear. She began to run, her powerful strides covering the snow with impressive speed, her eyes darting in every direction.

“Pinky! Pinky, where are you?” Her calls echoed across the silent, empty plains, each unanswered cry a stab of dread in her heart. The vastness of the Arctic, usually a comforting home, now felt like
