Chapter 2

The Teddy's Tumble

While playing a game of toss, Pinky's teddy bear slips from her paws. It bounces and rolls away, disappearing into the snowy landscape. Pinky watches in surprise.

The world was a shimmering expanse of white, a playground crafted by winter itself. Pinky, her small pink bow a bright punctuation mark against her fluffy white fur, giggled. The sun, a benevolent eye in the vast blue sky, warmed her nose and made the snowflakes dance like tiny diamonds. Her most cherished companion, a worn and wonderfully soft teddy bear, lay nestled beside her. Its button eyes seemed to twinkle with shared joy.

“Teddy, let’s play toss!” Pinky declared, her voice a high, cheerful chirp. She nudged her teddy bear with her nose, her heart brimming with the simple, pure delight of a cub at play. She scooped him up with her paws, marveling at his familiar cuddliness, and tossed him a short distance into the soft snow. He landed with a gentle thump, his brown fur peeking out from the drifts. Pinky scrambled after him, her stubby legs pumping with excitement, her pink bow bobbing. She pounced, a blur of white and pink, and scooped him up again, nuzzling his furry head.

They continued their game, a delightful rhythm of toss and chase. Each throw was met with Pinky’s enthusiastic pursuit, her happy barks echoing in the crisp air. She loved the way Teddy tumbled and bounced, a little brown blur against the endless white. He was her best friend, her confidante, the silent witness to all her playful adventures.

Then, it happened. Pinky, with a particularly exuberant toss, sent Teddy a little higher, a little further than usual. The wind, playful and mischievous, caught him just so. Instead of landing with a soft thump, Teddy seemed to catch an unseen current. He tumbled, not just once, but twice, then three times, each rotation carrying him further away. He bounced off a small, icy patch, a tiny glint of silver, and then, with a final, disheartening roll, he disappeared over a low ridge of snow.

Pinky blinked. Her paws froze mid-step. The happy barks died in her throat. Where had Teddy gone? She’d never thrown him that far before. Curiosity, a powerful force in any young polar bear, began to bubble within her. She padded cautiously to the edge of the ridge, her pink bow tilting as she peered over.

The landscape stretched out before her, a vast, undulating sea of white. There was no sign of Teddy. Just endless snow, sculpted by the wind into smooth drifts and sharp ridges. A tiny prickle of unease began to stir in Pinky’s tummy. Teddy was usually so easy to find. He was her favorite toy, after all.

“Teddy?” she called out, her voice a little smaller this time. She took a tentative step down the other side of the ridge, her gaze sweeping the snowy expanse. Nothing. Just the wind whispering secrets she couldn’t quite understand.

She took another step, and then another, her initial surprise morphing into a growing concern. The ridge had hidden Teddy, surely. He must be just beyond it, waiting for her to find him. She trotted forward, her small nose twitching, trying to catch the familiar scent of her beloved toy. But the wind seemed to carry only the clean, sharp smell of ice and snow.

She rounded another drift, her heart thumping a little faster. Still no Teddy. The playful game had taken an unexpected turn. The familiar landscape, which had seemed so inviting moments ago, now felt… bigger. Wider. She looked back at the ridge she had come over, and it seemed further away than she remembered. A knot of worry began to tighten in her chest.

“Teddy!” she called again, louder this time, her voice laced with a growing urgency. She scanned the horizon, her eyes, so used to spotting seals in the distance, now searching for a small, brown shape. But there was only the dazzling, unbroken white.

A shiver, not entirely from the cold, ran down Pinky’s spine. She had never been this far from her Mama before. The familiar comfort of her mother’s warm fur and soothing presence felt suddenly very distant. She was alone, and the vastness of the Arctic, which had always seemed like her own personal playground, now felt a little bit daunting.

Meanwhile, back near their den, Mother Polar Bear stretched languidly, the sun warming her broad back. She’d been watching Pinky play, a soft smile gracing her muzzle. Her cub was such a joy, her energy boundless. But now, a quiet settled over the snow. The usual happy chirps and playful barks were absent. A subtle shift in the air, a stillness that felt wrong.

Mother Polar Bear’s ears twitched. She called out, her voice a deep, rumbling sound of affection. “Pinky! My little snowflake! Where are you?”

Silence answered her.

A flicker of concern, quickly followed by a surge of worry, coursed through her. Pinky rarely strayed so far without announcing her adventures. She called again, louder, her voice now tinged with a tremor of alarm. “Pinky! Come here, darling!”

Still no answer. The silence was heavy, oppressive. Mother Polar Bear’s protective instincts flared. She rose, her massive frame tense, her gaze sweeping the landscape where she had last seen her cub. The playful white expanse now seemed to hold a hidden threat. She padded towards the ridge, her heart beginning to pound with a frantic rhythm. She peered over, her eyes searching for the familiar flash of pink on her daughter’s head, the small, brown shape of her teddy bear.

But all she saw was the endless, unforgiving snow. Pinky was nowhere to be seen. A cold dread, far colder than any Arctic wind, began to seep into her bones. Her Pinky, her precious little cub, was gone. She let out a distressed cry, a sound of pure maternal anguish that echoed across the frozen plains. The hunt had begun.
