The air in Elara’s small room felt thick and heavy, mirroring the gloom that had settled deep within her heart. Outside, the village was preparing for the long, cold months ahead, their movements hurried and anxious. But inside, Elara felt a stillness, a suffocating quiet that amplified the whispers of doubt. The stories her grandmother used to tell, tales of a loving God who watched over everyone, felt like distant echoes, fading with each passing day. How could a loving God let the blight wither their crops, or let sickness steal the laughter from children’s voices? The darkness within her felt like a heavy cloak, muffling any spark of hope.

She traced the rough wood of her table, her fingers finding no comfort in its familiar grain. Elder Maeve’s words, though kind and wise, seemed to bounce off the walls of her despair. “There is a light within you, child,” she had said, her eyes twinkling with an ancient knowing. But Elara couldn’t find it. All she felt was a gnawing emptiness, a fear that she was not enough, that she would never be enough to make a difference. Kael’s cynical laughter, always just at the edge of her hearing, seemed to mock her efforts. “Faith is for the weak,” he’d scoffed just yesterday, his voice dripping with disdain. “We need strong hands, not hopeful prayers.” And even as she’d tried to argue, to defend the flicker of belief that still stubbornly refused to die, the words had caught in her throat.

The wind howled outside, a mournful sound that seeped through the cracks in the walls. Elara closed her eyes, trying to block it out, trying to conjure a memory of warmth, of peace. But the darkness pressed in, relentless. She thought of the children’s faces, pale and drawn, their usual bright eyes dulled with hunger. She thought of the worried lines etched on her parents’ faces. What could she, Elara, do? She was just one girl, filled with so much uncertainty.
