Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Wound That Remembers the Blade

The company rides east through increasingly blighted lands and discovers a ruined monastery where Lyra's ancestors once guarded the seals. Lyra uncovers records revealing that Malakar was not merely a fallen knight but was deliberately abandoned by the Kingdom of Light during a past mission — sacrificed to the darkness by a council decision led by Lord Borin's father. Kaelen grapples with the revelation that the Kingdom of Light bears partial responsibility for Malakar's fall. Malakar appears and, instead of attacking, invites Kaelen to understand the wound before attempting to heal it. Darius finds evidence suggesting the darkness is not merely invading but returning to reclaim something that was taken from it. Seraphina receives a devastating vision from the Heavens: the final battle will require not the destruction of the darkness but its redemption, and the cost may be Kaelen himself. The company barely escapes an ambush by shadow-guardians, and Kaelen makes a decision that puts him at odds with Valerius's instructions.

The channels still carried water, but the water was the color of old bruises, and it did not nourish what it touched. The road was a skeleton — the shape of a thing that had been alive, stripped of the thing that had made it live.

They had been riding for two days.
