Chapter 11
Chapter 11: The Darkness That Hates the Light
In the final days before the eastern march, Kaelen and his companions prepare for war while the Kingdom of Light grapples with fear and uncertainty. Commander Valerius reveals to Kaelen the full truth of his past failure — a border garrison lost to darkness years ago because he hesitated, and the cost of that hesitation: the life of a young knight whose name Kaelen recognizes. Lyra interprets signs in the ancient texts that suggest the source of the darkness is not merely an enemy to be defeated but a wound to be healed, and that Malakar himself may be the key. Darius confronts the council about the insufficient forces and the impossible math of the war ahead. Seraphina addresses the people of the capital for the first time, speaking not as a princess but as the voice of the Heavens, and her words move the common folk to volunteer in numbers that surprise the generals. The chapter ends with the company riding east at dawn, and Kaelen sensing, through the fire in his chest, that Malakar is waiting for them — and that the waiting is not patience but hunger.
The first day of preparation was the day Kaelen learned that war was not made of battles.
War was made of lists.
He sat at the long table in the war chamber with Valerius on his right and Elias on his left and a quartermaster across from him whose name was Aldous and whose face was the face of a man who had spent thirty years counting things and had never once counted enough. Aldous spoke in numbers. Numbers of soldiers, numbers of horses, numbers of rations, numbers of arrows, numbers of miles, numbers of days, and the numbers were the language of a man who understood that war was arithmetic and the arithmetic was the thing that determined who lived and who died, and the dying was the part that the numbers could not prevent but could only predict.
