Chapter 10

The Aftermath of Sacrifice & The Seeds of War

In the wake of Borin's exposure and flight, Kaelen and his companions face the political and emotional fallout in the capital. Commander Valerius arrives and learns of everything that transpired in the mountains and the council chamber. The King convenes a war council where Seraphina speaks the Heavens' directive: the Kingdom must take the offensive against the darkness at its source. Darius questions whether the remaining forces are sufficient, echoing the truth that the laborers are few. Kaelen struggles with the weight of leadership and his still-unmastered power, which he cannot summon at will. Lyra reveals more of the prophecy — the path to the source of darkness requires passing through the remaining corrupted seals. Valerius privately confesses his past failure to Kaelen: he once faced Malakar before, years ago, and survived only because others sacrificed themselves — a truth that has haunted him. Elias, still recovering from his injuries, pledges to ride regardless. Messengers are dispatched to neighboring kingdoms seeking alliance. Malakar is shown in the corrupted eastern lands, preparing the next phase of the invasion, aware that Borin has failed but already adjusting his strategy. The chapter ends with Kaelen standing alone on the capital walls at dawn, the fire in his chest quiet but present, resolving to lead the march east — not as the knight he was, but as the one he must become.

The silence was not reverence. It was the particular hush of a place where a large lie has been pulled up by the roots and the hole it leaves is wider than anyone expected.

Kaelen sat on the stone floor beside Elias, whose breathing had steadied but whose face carried the grey pallor of a man holding himself together by will alone. The wound along Elias's ribs had been bound — Seraphina had torn strips from her own cloak, and the white cloth was dark now, the red seeping through in slow, deliberate circles, as though the blood itself were patient. Darius stood near the door with his arms crossed, watching the corridor. He had not spoken since Borin's departure. The scar along his jaw looked deeper in the lamplight, a line of old violence drawn beneath a face that was always searching for new violence to prevent.
