Chloe sat on Maya's back porch, watching shadows stretch across the lawn. The box sat empty beside her. The fruit was gone. The thread in her chest was gone. But something else had taken root there, something that hummed when she thought about the forest.
Ben came out with a bag of chips and dropped into the chair next to her. "So. Tonight."
