The friends struggle to understand Elder Rowan's message about the third wish. Chloe's connection to the forest intensifies, and they discover a girl from their town who might be the one the tree intended the wish for.
The morning sun had climbed higher, slanting through Maya's kitchen windows in warm rectangles across the floor. The four of them stood frozen around the wooden box, the glowing fruit casting soft golden light against their faces.
Ben broke the silence first. "So we're just supposed to wander around town asking people if they need a magical wish? 'Excuse me, ma'am, you look like you're having a rough day. Want some enchanted fruit?'"
"That's not what she meant," Chloe said, but her voice wavered.
