The morning sun, a hazy orb of pale gold through the alien canopy, cast dappled shadows across the clearing. It was a new kind of light, softer, tinged with an unfamiliar hue that reminded Liam of a watercolor painting left out in a gentle rain. The air, too, was different, carrying the scent of damp earth and a whisper of something sweet, like overripe fruit, yet with an underlying sharpness that tickled the back of his throat. Yesterday’s fear, a cold, clenching fist in his gut, had receded, replaced by a gnawing hunger and a desperate pragmatism. They were here. And they needed to eat.

Sarah, Liam’s mother, her usual vibrant energy subdued but not extinguished, was already at the edge of the woods, her eyes scanning the undergrowth with a focused intensity. Her brow was furrowed, not in worry, but in concentration. She’d always been the one to notice the smallest details, the first to spot a rare bird’s nest or a patch of wild strawberries. Now, that instinct was their lifeline.

“Liam, come here a moment,” she called, her voice a low murmur that wouldn’t carry far. He scrambled to her side, his worn sneakers crunching on fallen leaves that felt strangely spongy underfoot.
