Chapter 9
A Shadowed Meeting
Following a cryptic clue, Sarah arranges a clandestine meeting. She hopes to gain insight but walks into a trap, narrowly escaping an orchestrated 'accident'.
The air in the city still felt heavy, a palpable shroud woven from collective sorrow and the lingering scent of funeral lilies. Sarah Jenkins, however, felt a different kind of weight pressing down on her – the weight of unanswered questions. The official narrative surrounding Senator Sterling’s passing, a sudden and tragic illness, felt too neat, too convenient. It was the hushed, almost frantic conversation she’d overheard near the back of the cathedral, just as the somber procession began, that had lodged itself under her skin like a splinter. Fragments of words: "unforeseen complication," "containment," and a name, a name that sent a chill through her despite the cathedral’s cool marble – Vance. Arthur Vance.
Her editor, a gruff but fair man named Henderson, had dismissed her nascent suspicions as the overzealousness of a rookie journalist. "Sterling was a national treasure, Sarah. Let the man rest. You've got enough on your plate with the post-funeral analysis." But Sarah couldn't let it go. She’d spent the last few days digging, sifting through public records, cross-referencing Sterling’s recent legislative activities, and, most importantly, trying to find any connection, however tenuous, to Arthur Vance, a man whose political influence was as undeniable as it was opaque.
The cryptic clue had come late last night, an anonymous email with a single line of text and a timestamp: "The old clock tower, midnight. He knows what they did." The sender was unknown, the message vague, but the urgency felt real. Sarah, armed with a small digital recorder and a healthy dose of trepidation, had decided to take the bait.
