The chill of the mausoleum air clung to Sarah’s skin, a stark contrast to the humid, suffocating blanket of grief that had settled over the city for days. Senator Sterling’s funeral had been a spectacle of national sorrow, a carefully orchestrated symphony of eulogies and hushed sobs. But for Sarah, it had been a stage, a grand, somber proscenium where the first, almost imperceptible cracks in a polished facade had begun to appear. Now, tucked away in a quiet corner of her cramped apartment, the echoes of those whispers, those fleeting glances, those too-loud pronouncements of Sterling’s unwavering integrity, felt less like comforting reassurances and more like deliberate diversions.

Eleanor Vance, the senator’s former Chief of Staff, had been a study in controlled distress. Her grief seemed genuine, etched into the fine lines around her eyes, but beneath it, Sarah had sensed a current of something else – fear, perhaps, or a deep, gnawing unease. Their brief, furtive conversation after the reception, amidst the polite murmurs of condolences and the clinking of champagne glasses, had been a masterclass in veiled truths. “He was… he was working on something significant, Sarah,” Eleanor had murmured, her gaze darting nervously towards the clusters of powerful figures still milling about, their faces a mask of shared solemnity. “Something that would have… changed things.”
