The Hunters' Net
Gloom Corp's traps appear, threatening the wolves. Anya, guided by Kaelen, must use her newfound abilities to warn and protect the pack.
The air in the ancient woods had changed. It was no longer just the scent of damp earth and pine needles that Anya breathed in; there was a new tang, sharp and metallic, that prickled her nose and made the fur on her arms stand on end. She felt it deep in her bones, a tremor of unease that echoed the rustling of leaves and the nervous chirping of unseen birds. The wolves, her wolves, were restless. Their usual playful yips and contented sighs had been replaced by low growls and the frantic thumping of paws on the forest floor.
Anya sat by the gurgling stream, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns of moss on a fallen log. Kaelen had been near earlier, his amber eyes, usually pools of calm wisdom, now held a flicker of something akin to fear. He hadn't spoken in words, of course, but the way he’d nudged her hand with his wet nose, the low whine that vibrated through his powerful chest – it was a language Anya was only beginning to understand. It spoke of danger, of unseen threats lurking just beyond the familiar trees.
“What is it, Kaelen?” she’d whispered, her voice barely disturbing the quiet. “What do they want?”
