Baraka's Countermove

Baraka senses the growing unrest. He uses his influence and intimidation tactics to try and quell the farmers' burgeoning rebellion, increasing patrols.

The air in the marketplace, usually thick with the scent of roasting maize and the chatter of bartering, now carried a nervous tension, a low hum of unease that vibrated beneath the surface of everyday life. Jonas, his eyes scanning the faces of the farmers gathered, felt it keenly. It was the prickling sensation of being watched, the subtle shift in the wind that warned of an approaching storm. He’d seen it before, in the parched fields of his village, in the anxious glances of his neighbors. This was Baraka’s shadow, lengthening and deepening, a tangible presence even when the man himself was absent.

He exchanged a look with Kwame, whose usual boisterous energy was subdued, replaced by a watchful stillness. Kwame had been instrumental in spreading Jonas’s message, his own deep-seated anger at Baraka a powerful catalyst. But even Kwame, who had witnessed Baraka’s cruelty firsthand, seemed to feel the weight of the landlord’s power pressing down.

“They are making it harder to meet,” Kwame murmured, his voice low, barely audible above the distant bleating of goats. “The patrols are more frequent, the men more… watchful. They question anyone who lingers too long, anyone who looks too thoughtful.”
