Chapter 6
The Crimson Tide
A brutal battle engulfs the kingdom. Kaelan fights with all his might, saving many, but the victory is drenched in sorrow, marked by grievous wounds and the tragic loss of Gareth.
The air tasted of iron and ash. It clung to the back of my throat, a coppery bite that mirrored the sting in my eyes. Before me, the world had dissolved into a maelstrom of screaming steel and guttural roars. Crimson, the color of a thousand sunsets I’d never seen, painted the churned earth and the splintered wood of barricades. This was not the glorious dawn I had envisioned, the one where my name would be sung from the highest towers. This was a ragged, desperate struggle for survival, a symphony of pain.
Gareth was beside me, a whirlwind of controlled fury. His shield, usually polished to a mirror shine, was now a battered mess of dents and gouges, reflecting the chaotic dance of death around us. He moved with a grace that belied the brutality of his actions, his sword a silver blur, each strike precise, each parry a testament to years of training. We fought back-to-back, a familiar comfort in the unfolding horror. His presence was a warm ember against the gnawing cold of fear.
"Hold the line, Kaelan!" he’d shouted, his voice a raw rasp above the din, just before a hulking brute, all muscle and malice, lunged at me. I met his charge, my own sword singing a desperate song. The impact sent tremors up my arm, but I held. Gareth was there, a flash of steel from the flank, felling the beast before it could finish me.
