The biting wind whipped around the crenellated battlements, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and distant pine. Below, the sprawling city of Eldoria, a tapestry of grey stone and flickering torchlight, seemed to hold its breath. I stood there, the cold seeping into my bones, a familiar ache settling in my chest. It was nights like these, when the silence pressed in, that the hunger for something more, something real, clawed at me.
"Still gazing at the stars, Kaelan?"
Gareth's voice, rough but warm, broke through my reverie. He materialized from the shadows, a sturdy silhouette against the bruised twilight sky. A half-empty wineskin dangled from his hand, and a weary smile played on his lips. He was a man carved from resilience, his armor bearing the honorable scars of countless skirmishes, much like my own. Yet, unlike the indifferent faces that populated the city below, Gareth’s gaze held a spark of genuine understanding.
