The wind howled like a wounded wolf, tearing at the canvas of our makeshift shelter, a tapestry of hides stretched taut against the skeletal branches of a fallen pine. Rain, cold and sharp, hammered down, each drop a tiny fist against the earth, a relentless percussion that mirrored the unease thrumming in my chest. Beside me, Kaelen, his silhouette a dark, comforting presence against the flickering light of our meager fire, drew his knees closer to his chest. The storm had driven us to this, a forced pause in our desperate journey, a moment of quietude in the heart of chaos.
“The spirits are restless tonight,” Kaelen murmured, his voice a low rumble, barely audible above the tempest’s roar. He spoke of the unseen, of the currents that flowed beneath the surface of our world, and in his words, I heard not just the wind’s fury, but the echo of our own anxieties.
I nodded, watching the flames dance, casting wild shadows that writhed and contorted across the rough-hewn walls of our refuge. “They know we are far from home. They feel the blight’s cold touch, even here.” My own fingers traced the worn leather of my quiver, the familiar texture a small anchor in the swirling uncertainty. This quest, this desperate gamble to save our people, felt heavier with each passing day. The elders had placed their faith in us, in Kaelen’s visions and my tracking skills, but the weight of that trust was a burden I sometimes feared I could not bear.
